Health care PR; a niche segment of PR
Public Relation is a management function which
helps in maintaining the effective communication between an organisation and
its various stakeholders. In today’s conglomerate world, PR is a growing sector
in every business sphere. It has become an integral part of every business organisation
and plays an important role whether it is health care sector, managing
politicians or hospitality sector.
With the growth in various industries and
sectors, PR has segregated in to various niche segments; Health care PR is one
such segment. Hospitals undertake significant missions in securing physical and
psychological well-being of the society, in short providing public health-care.
As for the public relations, it is a series of continuing activities evaluating
the attitudes of the target community, developing relations based on mutual
cooperation and acceptance, aiming at gaining the respect, affection and
sympathy of the target people and establishing a positive image, and thus it is
a sine qua non for every health care organisation.
Health care PR comprises of undertake various
internal and external PR activities. In health care sector, external PR
Activity, i.e. Events and Outreach Programs have tremendous significance. They
are not only considered Brand building tool but also act as direct medium
through which more customers can be attracted. Events are multi-beneficiary
strategy which can be employed by any Business sector.
In Hospitals where Brand Building and
Relationship Building are very essential, Events prove themselves as worthy
technique. They help in maintaining and building relationship with every
external stakeholder - Customers, Patients, Shareholders, Governing Bodies,
NGO’s, Society etc.
Hospitals are constantly under media
attention thus media management is an important element of Health care PR. Press
Conference is an integral tool of media management. It is led by C.E.O or C.O.O
of hospital along with Head of Department Doctor. Hospitals usually organise
press conferences to respond to controversies, unveil a new technique or
medical marvel, announce the release of a new medicine and achievement of
Doctors and Surgeons.
Other than this, Health care PR deals in
internal and external communication. Publication of Newsletter is also the
function of PR.
PR is an amalgamation of roles performed to
manage corporate communication, media management and brand management.
Therefore, in hospitals rather than outsourcing their PR work to some agency, they
prefer managing a separate PR team in their hospital for the same.
